On February 1, 2022, News Room Guyana released the interview with Ambassador Guo Haiyan on its website and social media platform. Ambassador Guo answered questions about the one-China principle, China-Guyana relations and cooperation, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), etc. and briefly introduced celebration activities for the Year of the Tiger Spring Festival and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Guyana.

Ambassador Guo stated that the one-China principle is related to China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and is the underlying foundation of the development of China-Guyana relations. As early as in 1971, before the two countries formally established relations, Guyana had voted in favor of the Resolution No. 2758 of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly and supported the restoration of the lawful seat of the People's Republic of China in the UN. At that time, Guyana had already fully recognized that there is only one China in the world, the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. Since then, every Guyanese Government has reiterated the commitment to the one-China policy and the Chinese side appreciates it.

Reviewing the past 50 years after the establishment of diplomatic ties, Ambassador Guo emphasized that the friendship between China and Guyana stands the test of time. The two countries have not only become each other's mutually-trusted political good friend and good partner of economic and trade cooperation, but also have conducted plentiful people-centered cooperation projects in various areas including health, education, ICT, and sports that have improved people's livelihood and enhanced friendship between the two peoples. Since Guyana joined the BRI in 2018, our bilateral cooperation has made significant progresses in all its 5 prioritized areas. Especially after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Guyana have been standing side by side to overcome the difficulties together. The fast-provided vaccines and medical supplies from China have contributed greatly to the COVID-19 response of Guyana.

Ambassador Guo introduced the progress of China-Guyana pragmatic cooperation projects that have received considerable attention in Guyana, and resolutely refuted the "debt trap" rhetoric made by certain EU representative. She said that shortage of funds is the bottleneck of development for many developing countries. Chinese financing has been dedicated to the improvement of self-supporting capacities of developing countries and China has paid high attention to their debt sustainability, requiring adequate feasibility study for every project. After the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, China has actively supported G20's Debt Service Suspension Initiative and stayed ahead in G20 members in terms of debt deferral amounts, which has made important contributions to the fight against the pandemic and the economic recovery of developing countries. She appealed to Guyanese friends to look at China in an objective and fair way and do not misjudge China only because of some partial or even erroneous remarks.
