China-Guyana Investment Opportunities Webinar Held

China-Guyana Investment Opportunities Webinar was held on August 22nd. This engagement was co-sponsored by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade(CCPIT), the Chinese Embassy in Guyana and GO-INVEST, organized by the China Chamber of International Commerce(CCOIC) and supported by Guyana Private Sector Commission(PSC). Chinese Ambassador to Guyana H.E. Guo Haiyan, together with Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of Guyana Hon. Oneidge Walrond, Vice Chairman of CCPIT Mr. Zhang Shaogang, and Guyanese Ambassador to China H.E. Anyin Choo, attended and addressed the webinar.

CEO of GO-INVEST Dr. Peter Ramsaroop, Vice Chairman of PSC Mr. Ryan Alexander, and Chairman of the Association of Chinese Enterprises in Guyana Mr. Simon Gao respectively introduced the investment climate and policies of Guyana, the profile of Guyanese business associations and the investment experiences of Chinese enterprises in Guyana. About 100 participants from governmental agencies, trade promotion agencies, business circles and media attended the webinar.

In recent years, the economic and trade cooperation between China and Guyana has been steadily advancing and even closer, with remarkable achievements in trade, investment, infrastructure serving as a major driving force. Though the world economy and international trade are hit hard by the severe impact of COVID-19, China-Guyana economic and trade ties maintain resilient, dynamic and robust. According to the data of China Customs, the bilateral trade volume of goods has increased by 213% in the past five years, with an average annual growth rate of more than 42.5%. In 2020, bilateral trade in goods increased by 80% year on year, reaching US$570 million. In 2021, it registered US$710 million, a year-on-year increase of 23.7%. For the first half of this year, the bilateral trade in goods reached US$949 million, an increase of 223% year on year. China's investment in Guyana is also growing rapidly, making contribution to Guyana’s economic development. The conference center donated by Chinese Government, and the roads, hotels, airport built by Chinese enterprises have been contributing to the socio-economic transformation of Guyana. Ferries, water plants, broadband networks and other projects have improved the local people's livelihood. In 2018, the two governments signed the MOU on the Belt and Road Initiative, which injected new momentum into the practical cooperation between the two sides. The bilateral cooperation covers agriculture, energy, mining, transportation and ICT, etc.
